What Are Some Good Health Tips For Vacationing In Mexico
No one likes to come down with a cold or flu. Getting sick and missing work or school can be very inconvenient. But when you are on vacation, the last thing in the world you want or expect is to contract some sort of illness. When traveling outside the country for a vacation in Mexico, you should keep in mind these habits and tips that will help to keep you healthy.
Before you even leave for your vacation in Mexico be sure to hydrate yourself by drinking lots of fluids. Once you arrive at your destination be sure to drink only distilled or bottled water. Climate and altitude changes can have an effect on your body. Give your body time to acclimatize to its new environment and don’t go overboard your first day in Mexico. Eat sparingly the first day and only what your body is fairly familiar with. Make sure that any fruits or vegetables that you purchase get washed in distilled or bottled water and peel them if possible.
Washing your hands often can also keep you remain healthy. Taking along some antibacterial soap would be a wise idea. To go along with that you should have a small first aid kit that would include several different sizes of band-aids, antibacterial ointment, alcohol swabs, and any over the counter pain medication you might need. It is advisable to check with your physician before you leave the country to see if there are any preventative medications you should take to help in preventing common illness to that region. This is an important step to take especially if you are over 65 years of age, have an acute or chronic illness, or are pregnant. And any prescription medications you have should be kept in their original bottles with legible labeling that will prevent any misunderstandings.
Try to avoid over-indulgences of alcohol while in Mexico, as this will lower your body’s resistance to disease and raise the risk that you may become ill. If you do feel like you are coming down with something seek medical attention immediately and avoid contact with the general population. This is especially true if you are on a cruise ship or staying at a resort that has buffet dining. Besides, you want to be able to remember the great times that you had on vacation, so drinking in moderation would be a good way to keep your senses keen.
If you have any food allergies you should be especially careful about what you eat. Make sure you inquire of any restaurant staff where you dine about what is in each dish and if there are any items you are allergic to that it may be cooked in.
Most of us work hard all year long just to be able to take a week or two off to enjoy relaxing and having fun. No one wants to get sick on his or her vacation, but we have all probably had that experience. Becoming ill in a foreign country can have consequences that may be more serious depending on the circumstances, so do what you can to lessen the risks to your health while on vacation in Mexico.

Nice tips. Washing your hands while in Mexico is really huge! Just washing your hands a few times per day will really cut down on the germs you will likely pick up along the way.
These are pretty good suggestions. You might also want to add that you would be better off not drinking running watter while in Mexico – bottled water only.
Hi,
Great and helpfull post about health tips indeed.
Keep up the good work,
Regards
Edwin
good post, well the tips given in this post are even though general and simple but following these healthy tips will really keeps us fit in vacation trips.
Yeah I would definitely not drink the running water in Mexico. The bottled water is cheap enough for this not to be a problem. Also be wary of ice in your drinks — they may use running water which could make you sick.
Great tips to follow! No one likes getting sick but especially not when on holiday. I think that watching what and where you eat is a biggie because many restaurants in Mexico would not have food hygiene standards to adhere to.
Very basic tips but a lot of people seem not to even follow these which do keep you from having a vacation where you throw up the whole time.
Nice health tips when in Mexico. This post is very helpful and informative.
The thing is that I am very bad at Geography. But this is one place that I know and will surely want to go.
Man this is one place that I want to go before I die and I surely will.
I think people tend to forget there are so many beautiful places left to see and that they should not stick to going to the same place again and again.
I’m going to Mexico early next year, sooooo glad I read this before I go! thanks!
Thanks a lot! This was a useful post, seriously cos my cousin bro is leavin for Spain and I can send this link to him and appear smart!
Well I am kind of a dim wit that is the reason why I am so excited.
I’m not planning on any vacation but I’m writing a novel and I think this is something that I can add into that and it would add more variation into that. Well with your permission.
Really nice tips. I often face health problem for my child when we go out and really I am very much worried about that. Hope your tips will give relief from now on.
“Try to avoid over-indulgences of alcohol while in Mexico.” That right there has been my biggest problem when going to Mexico. The margaritas are delicious.
Just curious, would you be interested in exchanging blogroll links?
Great ideas to follow. on our recent trip to Mexico we took a stack of sanitary wipes and had the whole family use it before we had something to eat and after. Also we kept on using the wipes to clean our hands after we touch something eample the bus handles etc.
Cheers
Sometimes, you can be overly cautious and ruin a trip! I feel like many people that travel to third-world countries worry too much, and end up getting sick anyway!
Just be careful, if you can’t cook it or peel it, don’t eat it!
You’ll be fine. Just relax and enjoy the trip…
I love traveling and this is a useful information, thanks for the tips, im actually preparing a trip through mexico after i finished my vacation here in Rieth.
very useful tips. take note for this!
thx 4 the information
cheers,
I would also recommend only drinking bottled water, possible even brushing your teeth with bottled water too. I bought one of those UV sanitizing lights.. dont know if it really works, but for 100$ bucks lets hope so!

Very helpful article thanks!! , I’ll keep these tips in mind especially that it’s almost Christmas and my family is planning a big trip.
One of my biggest fears is that contracting a parasite of some sort during vacation. I hear that there are blowflies that leave their larva in your body and also some worms in Africa that you can get that can cause a very excrucitating condition ( i think their called ” fireworms ).
mexico is one of several country that will be nice to travel destination
I don’t know if I agree Charlyne, as long as you don’t swallow any water when brushing your teeth, you should be good.
What is the UV sanitizing light? Never heard of one of those…
Talk to your local health store, you can purchase products that will get you stomach ready for you go. We eat the local food, have drinks and never get sick. We do however drink bottled water. But, lots of drinking and the hot sun will spoil anybodys day in paradise.
As some of the commenters before me said, having bottled water for drinking is an absolute must. Especially in the tropical weather, dehydration is an issue and water-transmitted diseases are also an issue. Bottled water is the safest bet.
I researched going to Mexico, in the Netherlands it is advised to take the following precautions;
– vaccination Hepetitis A.
– diphtheria, tetanus and infantile paralysis; this is a vaccin that most of us already have received when we were a baby.
– And last but not least vaccin when staying longer than three months; abdomen typhoid fever, hepetitis B
– Also depending on time of year and area you are visiting some anti-malaria precautions are also advised.
– protect yourself against flies because they can carry denque. And also there is a high chance of getting rabiës when getting biten by animals.
Please do not, none of the above are obligatory and can only reduce risks, not avoid them completely.
Friday I was looking for sites related to ski vacations but specifically for sites about st thomas vacation packages and I found you site.
Although simple these are really good and extremely useful tips. By following these tips you’ll be able to stay out of trouble as well as enjoy your trip without being too overcautious. Awesome article.
Above poster…I purchased one of those UV sanitizers as well. Foolishly I inquired more about them AFTER I purchased it, but apparently it is pretty risky to rely on them for fresh water in a place like Mexico. One of my co-worker’s wife got severely ill while during their vacation after they were told one of those gadgets would be perfectly fine. I’d be careful! Thanks.
Excellent tips of survival given here. I think we can make use of this tip in Dubai or Middle east nation too, except the alcohol part.
As a person who loves traveling and who travels a lot i can say by experience that these are great tips. Very good information for people wants to travel mexico or any other place with similar conditions.
The tips here were extremely useful. Thank you very much for this article, I’m sure it will help me loads in my travel in the future.
Thanks for all the very useful tips, which can be followed in a lot of other holiday places, too. Drinking bottled water is always good, I think.
Excellent tips no matter where you are traveling in the world. Plane flights alone will dehydrate you. Another good thing to do is eat something like Activia for a week or so before leaving on your trip. The probiotics really help with digestion which definitely knocked me down on my first trip.
I moved to mexico and here are some things that I think helps. Stay away from the vegies while on vacation! Wash your hands 2 times as much as you do back home. Eat lots of tacos, drink lots of beer, have a great time.
The largest complaint I hear from the locals is how rude gringos are. So if you try and be extra friendly to them, and practice your broken spanish on them, they will go WAY out of their way to make sure you have an amazing time.
Who knows maybe you will get invited to a BBQ!
One thing’s for sure – stay away from tap water. I know a lot of it isn’t as clean as it is in other parts of the world. Bottled water is extremely cheap, and much more sanitary!
Yes i agree with you, we have drink enough fresh water to avoid dehidration, and washing hands is important too because sometimes we don’t know what we touch maybe it’s dirty so to make it sure we have to wash our hand before eat meals … thanks for this good article ..
Great tips! Health problems are often a problem in Mexico especially after trying some really hot food .. Thanks for the useful Infos
Maya
Good Tips. Take some hand sanitizer with you too. And try to wash your hands as many times a s possible. You should use these tips for everywhere you go including Hawaii
1) Don’t drink the water!
2) Bring a local person or more than one person if you go to a strip club
3) Bring a phrasebook or something so you can at least ask for things in Spanish. When you ask how much for cab fare and you understand, you can negotiate it down a bit.
Have fun!!
Thanks for the tips usually I follow these simple basic things.
My advice would also be don’t drink too much alcohol in the wrong places and get in fights with the local gangsters, I promise it would be bad for your health, also instead of taking a taxi everywhere, spare your money and rent car.
interesting article, thanks for sharing me this article, especially i want to go to mexico next month … this is really useful information for me
definitely good advice. Be careful and try to enjoy the trip.
I agree it really sucks to fall sick while you are on a vacation. Makes it a wasted trip i think.
That being said, i think getting some health supplements to boost your immune system helps a lot.
Anyways i would definitely love to visit Mexico sometime soon.
It really is quite amazing what we take for granted in a modern country where health hazards as you describe them here are essentially non existent. I would assume that travellers from Mexico to the USA or UK woud not be required to take the suggested precautions.
Very usefull tips, thank you. Especially the tip with the bottled water is very useful.
I will use some of this tips when going to Mexico next time
These were really pretty helpful post.
Would keep in mind when in Mexico.
My last visit to Mexico was about a couple of months ago, however this post came in my notice now. I’ll be heading off there soon, and this time keep these tips in my mind
Not only is this advice very good for travelling to Mexico, I think it’s great advice for anywhere you plan to travel. I travelled around Europe last summer. I made sure to always wash my hands, drink bottled water, and not to buy and eat anything from a sketchy-looking street stand.
With that said, I liked mapa de africa’s comment. Don’t be overly cautious. Make sure you enjoy the trip and take in the different culture, wherever you travel.
Great tips, it’s depressing going away to discover a new country and spending the time ill.
Thank you for you useful tipps. I will consider them by my next journey. That everyone has to drink a lot of fluits for your health and fitness in hot countries is well known but I cannot hear it often enough because I “forget” it sometimes and then I get bad headache in the evening. So thank you for your post, was a pleasure to read it!
