Chichen Itza is an archeological site that blends the styles of the Toltec and the Puuc. The many buildings feature sculptures that represent Mayan gods as well as other architecture that is delicately laid out and styled.

The earliest findings here have been from 1 AD to 250 AD. It is located right near a large well that helped to make it a Mayan center of activity. Chichen Itza rose to prominence as a social center. Its location right off the coast made it the perfect spot for those coming in off the sea.

The city got its name from the well at the center of the city. Chichen Itza translates to Mouth of the Well of the Itza. The prominence of this city made it possible for the people of Itza to rule the entire Yucatan peninsula.

The best time to visit Chichen Itza is during the spring equinox. The spring equinox is an archeoastronmical phenomenon. It occurs on March 21st when the sun shines on the Northern and Southern hemispheres equally. At this time, it is possible to see a serpent projection from the sun. This happens when the sun sets.

Witnessing this event has become a tradition at Chichen Itza. People flock to the area to witness the phenomenon. As the serpent projection appears above the temple it appears to move and creates a grand illusion. The illusion lasts for only two minutes, but they are minutes that are well spent. This incredible phenomenon is unexplainable and must be seen to be appreciated since words used to describe it can not do it justice.

People from all corners of the world have voted on this famous Mayan temple city to proclaim it to be one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. This city is still an important historic site and remains important to the Mayans.

The various areas of the site are truly gems. From the Kukulkan pyramid to the Chac Mool temple to the Hall of the Thousand Pillars. The structures remaining are amazing. They add to the general charm of the area and allow visitors to fully respect this long age fallen city.

  • I had no idea Chichen Itza was considered a gay hot spot! I actually found a photo of a cool pyramid as an art assignement and once I finished painting it, the entire latin population of the Long Beach City College had come to see it! I hope to visit it someday. I’m in Palm Springs, another gay hot spot! I’ll look through your site and maybe comment on some entries if I find any.

  • What exactly makes an area a gay hot spot? Is it that just a lot of gay people visit there or are the locals more open to gay people?

This does sound like an interesting city to visit. I would really like to see the serpent projection during spring equinox.

  • Straight people usually don’t ever stop to consider how being gay affects things like travel destination choice. Unfortunately in some parts of the world homosexuality is still not commonly accepted. When you’re off on vacation you don’t want to be forced to hide who you are.

  • Wow, I didn’t know Chichen Itza is considered one of the new 7 wonders. Going at the Spring Equinox would be perfect because it’s already spring break time. So, I am assuming Cancun is a gay-friendly destination as well?

  • I have just found your blog and am busy reading all your articles, especially on Mexico. I am currently planning a trip (with a focus on ruins), so am soaking up everything that I can get! I am keen to see Chichen Itza as it has some fantastic history and is really impressive (plus I have been researching it for years!!). I was wondering though, when you say a gay hot spot, do you mean that homosexuality is accepted, or is it because it’s set up especially (with perhaps bars, clubs etc)? Thanks!

  • I do not know.it is not a good idea i guess.
