As I was younger I always wanted to go to a summer camp, but was never able to afford it. I do agree that you need to find the right one and do a lot of research.

Doing this will just make your child resent you. One way to make the experience easier for your child is to try to arrange for his or her best friend to also go. They will still meet a lot of people have learn a lot, but they would also have the security of a good friend.

The world today is pretty crazy. It would be madness to send a teenager to a Adventure camp without research. Btw, You have to ask kids them before sending them. Adventure camp is pointless if they don’t want to go.
As a father of 3, finding a great summer program for the kids and the wife are very important. You may want to look into Callaway Gardens (GA) as a good alternative. A bit pricey but seems to be worth it in the end.
