This is an important first step to a safe staying in Mexico.

Not only the government should be informed, also leave information about your travel with a friend, a family member or any other person you trust. Copy your airline tickets and your passport, so that you can leave one copy at home. If anything goes wrong these precautions help verify your whereabouts. You are also advised to select a person who can be contacted in case of emergency.

When you are in Mexico do not act in an brainless way. Don?t live in cheap hotels, think before getting on a bus or walking down a street. You should never get into a taxi which you have stopped on the streets. Many people are robbed in taxis which they have not arranged beforehand. Never carry a large amount of money and credit cards with you nor expensive jewellery. Criminal people always recognize tourists so be on the lookout!

You may believe that you already know a lot about Mexico from films. You should know that some things are wrong. Drinking alcohol in public places is not the norm in Mexico; it is a crime and you can get arrested for that. Also be cautious when drinking in nightclubs or bars. A popular trick on tourists is to drug them.

Never forget to be cautious, no matter where you are. Be on the look out when travelling by public transportation. Stay alert when travelling during nighttimes and busy hours. Busses are a very cheap form of transport but you should prefer other more comfortable forms of travelling. Many tourists are mugged while riding on a bus.

If you need any help contact the United States Embassy immediately. You can also contact the Mexican Ministry of Tourism; they offer a twenty-four hour hotline. The Mexican version of 911 is 060 in Mexico City and 066 in the rest of the country. You will get in contact with the Mexican police. The Mexican Red Cross can be called if you are injured or need basic medical attention. It is free of charge.

These Advices on precautionary measures and phone numbers are important. Don?t wait with your preparation. If you want to have a nice and safe vacation you should begin to take the measures as soon as possible and long before your vacation actually starts.

  • Everything you said is true, especially the part about not drinking in public. In my late teens, I went down to Mexico and they warned us about it, the locals and regulars were very helpful. I lilke the idea about notifying the Embassy. What you didn’t mention that is super important is insurance. I broke my back while on a trip to Costa Rica and my family had to mortgage their home to pay the $30,000 fee the doctors charged me. Great article, easy to read and good info.

  • The thing you said about taxis is true. My friend was robbed once in taxi. It’s a shame :( Mexico is beutiful country.
