Get a Free Vacation In Mexico – Or Die – Or Both
Well since nobody wants to go to Mexico because of the Swine flu, Hotels on the Caribbean are offering FREE vacations for 3 years if you contract Swine Flu while you are in Mexico. The reason is Swine Flu is killing Mexico tourism.
58 people have died from the Swine Flu as of this writing, and probably 58,000 have cancelled their trips to Mexico. Sites like Expedia and Hotels.com are offering penalty waivers for clients who do not want to go due to the Swine Flu, as are hotels.
This is now known as the Flu Free Guarantee. If you have symptoms 8 days after your trip you get 3 years of free travel to Mexico. Over 5,000 hotels are involved in this promotion. They really want to grow confidence in the Mexico tourism.
They have also published letters sent to the United States Government to lift the warning on traveling to Mexico. My question is, right now is this the best time to do this? I mean what if there is a severe impact. Forget the three years of free travel, what if people take them up on this offer and cause the spread to get worse.
Or my common feeling, has the government and the media blown this way out of proportion therefore destroying Mexico tourism, right at a time when we were seeing tourism starting to increase?
I believe this has also caused several hotels in the Cancun area to actually close their doors, or go belly up. So I understand trying to influence people to go there, but if it is not safe. Let’s not push our luck. If you are like me though you probably would be fine, I think this is a media made crisis that needs to go away.
