Mexico: A Gay Friendly Destination In Your Own Back Yard
When people think of Mexico they tend to think of this country as traditional, macho and Catholic. Nothing is further from the truth. Just like everywhere else there are places where there is homosexuality in Mexico.
Civil unions between gays have been legalized in the northern border state of Coahuila and Mexico City. The states of Veracruz and Michoacan are on the verge of passing the same measures just like Jalisco, Colima, Puebla and Guerrero.
Still homosexual is still in the closet, many gays still maintain a macho facade and the lesbian’s are still mostly underground. This is even though Mexico is very liberal in attitude towards homosexuality.
In general, Mexicans are more private about their personal lives than are Americans. Mexico is a country which gladly welcomes vacationers gay and straight alike. Mexico is such a gay friendly country that Planetout named it the top destination for gay travel in 2007.
Mexico offers a lot of wonderful places for gay tourists to visit. The following cities are the top gay travel destinations in the country.
Cancun. On top of the list is Cancun. Is the newest hot spot for gay visitors. Traditionally it was Acapulco, or Puerto Vallarta. This even though it has an image that it is a place for straight people on Spring Beak.
Situated in the Yucatan Peninsula state of Quintana Roo, the city has a subtropical climate with average temperatures averaging between 81 and 95 degrees. Downtown Cancun is home to a lot of gay nightlife and is located only fifteen minutes from the Hotel Zone.
The Karamba is the most popular club with a 30 year history of drawing a young crowd including a lot of international tourists. The Picante is another one not to miss, with its friendly mixed crowd. This club is popular with gay and straight, transvestites and everyone else.
Unofficially the gay beach is the Playa Delfines. It has the longest and widest beach. The Villas Tacul is geared towards homosexuals. There appears to be about hundreds of gay-friendly hotels to choose from.
Mexico City. This city has large population of gays and lesbian. Recently Mexico City made history by making same sex civil unions legal. For entertainment there are gay plays, and about two dozen gay clubs located mostly in the Zona Rosa. And then there is the Annual Gay Pride Parade.
Guadalajara. Mexico’s second city also has a large gay and lesbian population and is a great place for gay tourists to visit. Cultural amenities here include a popular gay radio show, a gay cultural center and a more atmosphere about homosexuality than seen in many other Mexican cities. Guadalajara has a particularly large lesbian population.
There is a long list of gay bars and clubs. But here is just a couple. The Angel’s bar that plays electronica. Monica’s Disco plays Latin rhythm disco. To locate other clubs and bars for a bit of nightlife look for La Guia Rosa or Zona Gay.

I was not aware that some areas in Mexico allow same sex marriages. It is surprising that they allow that yet homosexuals are still mostly in the closet. You’d think people would become more accepting as it becomes recognized by law.
I never thought of it, but I guess there are homosexuals everywhere!
I think a lot of nonsense ! The law not become outside homasexual
Everybody deserves a great vacation if you ask me. It’s good to see Mexico caters to everyone!
Homosexuality is still banned in many countries & am surprised to know that Mexico is providing so much support to gay tourists.
This is actually one of the most surprising place to cater for this kind of activity. Its a good sign, other place should follow the example
I guess its not a problem at all. If Mexico can support gays we should also do the same thing. I hope there are more countries who will accept and support homosexuality.
Homosexuality is convention and it deserves respect from us. We should learn to accept them and give them rights to our society. After all we’re all human beings.

Thank you.
My sister and her wife vacationed in Ixtapa Zihuantaneho and stayed in an all-inclusive resort. They were welcomed and felt extremely comfortable and accepted.
Hi vey nice interesting blog im from birmingham i found this on msn i found this blog very interesting good luck with it i will return to this blog soon
There’s nothing wrong for being a gay and we should respect them. They deserves it. My brother is a gay and he’s leaving a pretty normal life. He went to Mexico last year and he shared the same stories and like what he said gays are acceptable in Mexico. I don’t see any wrong with it.
Mexico is open to just about anything that brings people. I am very familiar with the gay community in La Paz and they are a strong tight niche of people alot of europeans but still a good supportive community. I support the rights of all and I am glad to see worldwide support.
This just answered a previous question I had about what makes up a gay hot spot!! I didn’t realize Mexico was gay friendly. It’s good to see, so many countries are not nearly as open. Thanks
in that way mexico is really tolerant… even europe is not as tolerant
I support the rights of all and I am glad to see worldwide support.
thank you dude
I salute Mexico for being nice with the gay communities. Mexico will be a great destination for gays and even straights.
Wow!
shocking revelation. i also have the same mindset as others that when they say “Mexico” = “Macho”. Can’t believe that some places are now LGBT-friendly. but anyways, it’s good to hear that there are lots of gay vacation places today, or simply places where LGBT are welcomed very much. And one(1) of those places is Hawaii. Actually, we’ve been there for a gay vacation, a retreat themed “gay travel hawaii“. She said it was great there, so why not give a try?
Nowadays homosexuals are everywhere?
Thank you for helpful tips and hacks. I appreciate about that.
Great information thank you for sharing.
I don’t see any reason why we don’t respect and welcome homosexual community since we’re all just human beings. I will go to in Mexico next month and I’ll probably visit that town. Thank you.
I had no idea. You hear so much about Mexico on TV but it seems so much different from the stats I hear.
Thanks for the info!
Jason
I never heard the stories about homosexuals in Mexico before. It is interesting to know something about this place in different angles. I like traveling but Mexico is not in my list yet.
