Safety is always the number one concern when choosing to stay in a bed and breakfast. It may not necessarily mean bodily safety but is also entail being safe with regards to other property. It is wise to check out the area that one wishes to travel and stay in a bed and breakfast. Areas which may be well known for thievery or muggings may not be a good area to stay in. In case, there are no other options, taking extra precautions to ensure that one is relatively safe should be exercised. Choose a room in the bed and breakfast with a dead bolt or a lock which can be bolted from the inside as well as a key lock. Thanks for the great advice. My mother always taught me to look at any room first before paying, this way you have some negotiating power if things aren’t right. If you don’t feel safe in a room, it’s perfectly okay to ask another one.

Good tips Rolf. We often stay at B&B’s when we’re away and find that a great way to chck a place out is to search for reviews. Other people just like you have stayed there before and if there is something you ought to know (good or bad), then they may well have posted it on the web somewhere.
My wife and I vacation frequently and often use bed and breakfast accommodations instead of hotels. They always seem to have a more personal touch. Yes the wrong one can be a nightmare however,if you due your own due diligence, it can be a great experience.
It is so important to ensure that your b&b has adequate fire precautions and a working alarm system.
Many persons have died over the years in fires in hired accommodation and the law has been tightened much in the last few years.
For example here in Blackpool England some of the bed and breakfast establishment are situated over 2,3 or 4 floors with only a single staircase for access and at best 2 but usually one exit doors. That’s why the law here demands that fire alarms in the bedrooms and public landings are smoke optical (so sensitive the smoke from a candle can set them off)and that the alarm itself rates at 85 decibells or better to ensure it is heard.
Some great tips in this article thanks for posting it
